Pianist John Cervantes presents his flamenco-jazz quartet, driven by an electrifying rhythm section of cajon, drum kit and palmas. Cervantes Quartet perform brand new compositions fusing fiery flamenco grooves with contemporary jazz harmony and impassioned melodies. The band features a stunning line-up of performers including Cadiz-born percussionist Malick Mbengue (Chano Dominguez, Julian Sanchez), drum kit player Jon Desbruslais (Los Charly’s Orchestra, Buddy Greco), and double bass player Sandy Suchodolski (Quentin Collins, Renato D’Aiello). This evening they will be joined by the UK’s premier jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane, renowned for his robust, gutsy and compelling soloing.
John was first exposed to flamenco jazz by listening to Chick Corea’s various projects. This set in motion an interest that saw him studying the various flamenco song forms and rhythms, and seeking out flamenco musicians in London. In the summer of 2013 John began writing a set of material using the kinds of rhythms and harmony he’d been listening to, and hand selected the perfect group of musicians to play the music. The quartet plan to record in summer 2014.
A gig not to be missed at Pizza Express, Soho, London.
